US Air Force Initiates Search for Next-Generation Airlift to Replace C-17 Globemaster
The United States Air Force is actively planning the replacement for its iconic C-17 Globemaster III transport fleet. The initiative, known as the Next-Generation Airlift (NGAL) program, seeks a more survivable and efficient aircraft to operate in contested environments. With the current C-17 fleet averaging over 22 years in age, the USAF is focused on acquiring a successor with advanced capabilities. This future airlifter, which could potentially feature a blended-wing body design, is expected to enter service in the 2030s or 2040s. Key aerospace contractors like Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Airbus are anticipated to be major contenders for the program.
