US Air Force Grapples with Budget Constraints Amid Major Fleet Modernization and Nuclear Program Overruns
The U.S. Air Force is facing significant financial challenges as it pushes for major modernization. The new Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile program is billions over budget, threatening its future and forcing a high-level review. At the same time, the service is seeking the largest pay raise in decades to improve quality of life for its airmen. To offset these costs, the Air Force is planning to retire legacy aircraft such as the A-10, U-2, and older F-15 models. This budget crunch also comes as maintenance issues persist, with a recent grounding of some B-1B Lancer bombers over ejection seat problems.
