US Air Force and GA-ASI Demonstrate Advanced Manned-Unmanned Teaming with F-35 and MQ-20 Avenger
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) and the U.S. Air Force have successfully demonstrated advanced manned-unmanned teaming capabilities. The joint exercise featured an F-35A Lightning II fighter jet controlling an unmanned MQ-20 Avenger. During the test, the F-35 pilot issued commands to the Avenger, which then autonomously executed the mission and relayed updated sensor data back to the manned aircraft. This event validated key technologies, including the Avenger's autonomy core and the use of an open mission systems (OMS) architecture. The successful demonstration represents a critical step in developing the 'loyal wingman' concept for future Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) operations.
