University of Manchester Develops Graphene-Based Coating for Efficient Aircraft De-icing

Researchers at the University of Manchester, in collaboration with the National Graphene Institute, have developed a new graphene-based coating for aircraft wings. This innovative system is designed to prevent dangerous ice accretion by acting as a lightweight and low-power heater. The technology distributes heat evenly across the wing surface, offering a more efficient alternative to traditional de-icing methods that rely on heavy electrical systems or bleed air from the engines. Successful tests in an icing wind tunnel have demonstrated its effectiveness. This breakthrough could significantly reduce aircraft weight, improve fuel efficiency, and lower CO2 emissions.
