United Airlines VP Highlights "Critical Capability Gap" Left by Boeing 757
United Airlines' Vice President of Fleet, Patrick Quayle, has raised concerns about a "critical capability gap" in the industry created by the retirement of the Boeing 757. He argues that the 757 possessed a unique combination of range, capacity, and performance that is not fully matched by any modern aircraft. While new jets like the Airbus A321XLR are highly capable, they cannot replicate all the mission profiles the 757 could handle, particularly on transatlantic routes from smaller hubs or from 'hot and high' airports. This 'middle of the market' problem leaves airlines without a perfect one-for-one replacement for the versatile and aging aircraft. The issue underscores the challenge carriers face in maintaining network flexibility as the iconic 757 fleet is phased out.
