The View from 85,000 Feet: What SR-71 Blackbird Pilots Saw at the Edge of Space
Pilots of the legendary SR-71 Blackbird flew at altitudes exceeding 85,000 feet, providing them a unique perspective of Earth. From this vantage point, they witnessed the distinct curvature of the planet. The sky above them transitioned from a familiar blue to a deep indigo and eventually the blackness of space. Due to the thin atmosphere, stars were visible even during daytime missions. This experience, combined with speeds over Mach 3, gave crews the sensation of flying on the very edge of the atmosphere.
