The Forgotten Mach 2 Fighter: Why the YF-107 Ultra Sabre Was Cancelled in 1957

The North American YF-107 was a prototype fighter-bomber developed in the 1950s for the U.S. Air Force. Designed to carry nuclear weapons at supersonic speeds, it competed directly against the Republic F-105 Thunderchief. The aircraft was distinguished by its unique dorsal-mounted variable air intake and was capable of speeds exceeding Mach 2. Despite showing impressive performance and innovative design features, the USAF ultimately selected the F-105 for its tactical fighter-bomber role. Consequently, the promising YF-107 program was cancelled in 1957 after only three prototypes were built.
