Porter Airlines' Cautious Approach to Montreal's Second Airport Seeks to Avoid Mirabel's Costly Legacy
Porter Airlines is spearheading the development of a new passenger terminal at Montréal Saint-Hubert Airport (YHU), establishing a secondary hub for the city. The privately-funded C$200 million project will create a nine-gate facility designed to handle four million passengers annually, with operations starting in mid-2025. This strategy is a deliberate departure from the failed, government-led Montréal-Mirabel Airport megaproject, which was plagued by a poor location and lack of airline support. By focusing on a smaller, demand-driven model, Porter aims to provide a convenient alternative to Montréal-Trudeau (YUL) for domestic and transborder flights. The airline believes this right-sized approach will succeed where the previous multi-billion dollar effort failed.
