Port of Antwerp-Bruges Reports Decline in Q1 Container Volumes Amid Red Sea Disruptions

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges experienced a significant drop in container throughput during the first quarter of 2024. Container volumes fell by 7.2% in tonnes and 8.8% in TEUs compared to the same period last year. The decline is primarily attributed to the ongoing Red Sea crisis, which has caused vessel delays, skipped port calls, and a drop in calls from Far East services. Despite the container slump, the port did see positive growth in other segments, including conventional breakbulk and the roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) sector, which saw a slight increase.
