NTSB Faults FAA for Lax Oversight in Fatal Hawaii Skydive Crash
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has concluded that the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) inadequate oversight contributed to a 2019 skydiving plane crash in Hawaii that killed 11 people. Investigators found the FAA failed to act on previous safety recommendations, allowing a poorly maintained aircraft to operate with paying passengers. The twin-engine Beechcraft King Air had suffered significant wing damage in a prior incident which was not properly repaired. According to the NTSB, this pre-existing damage led to an in-flight breakup after the plane stalled shortly after takeoff. The board is again urging the FAA to close regulatory loopholes for these types of commercial flight operations.
