New Air Force One Lacks In-Flight Refueling, Creating 'Critical Capability Gap'

The next-generation Air Force One aircraft, two modified Boeing 747-8s, will enter service without the ability to be refueled in mid-air. This omission is officially described as a 'critical capability gap' compared to the current VC-25A fleet. The decision to remove the feature was made to reduce program costs and complexity. While the 747-8 has a very long natural range, the lack of aerial refueling limits its operational flexibility. This prevents the aircraft from staying airborne indefinitely during a national crisis, requiring it to land for fuel on the longest missions.
