Miracle at LaGuardia: The Story of the Air Canada Flight Attendant Ejected During a 1989 Crash

On February 16, 1989, Air Canada Flight 646, a McDonnell Douglas DC-9, crashed while on approach to New York's LaGuardia Airport. The aircraft stalled due to ice accumulation on its wings that was not properly addressed before takeoff in Toronto. Upon impact near the runway, the fuselage ruptured, and flight attendant Susan Hill was thrown from the aircraft into the mudflats of Flushing Bay. Miraculously, she was found conscious and survived the ordeal, along with all 28 other passengers and crew. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) cited the crew's failure to de-ice as the primary cause of the accident.
