Middle East Airlines Boost Airfreight Capacity, Yet Rates Stay Stubbornly Elevated
Middle Eastern airlines are leading the global air cargo recovery, reporting an 11.6% year-on-year increase in freight volumes for April. This growth significantly outpaces other regions, with the Middle East-Europe trade lane seeing a remarkable 30.1% surge. Despite this added capacity, global airfreight rates have remained unexpectedly high. Factors such as strong e-commerce demand and ongoing Red Sea shipping disruptions are fueling this trend. According to Xeneta data, the global average spot rate is up 9% year-on-year to $2.58 per kilogram, indicating a persistent and tight market for shippers.
