JetBlue and Spirit Airlines Terminate $3.8 Billion Merger Agreement
JetBlue and Spirit Airlines have officially terminated their $3.8 billion merger agreement. The decision was mutual and follows a federal judge's ruling in January that blocked the deal. The court had sided with the Justice Department, arguing the acquisition would harm consumers by reducing competition among low-cost carriers. As part of the termination, JetBlue will pay Spirit a $69 million fee. Both airlines acknowledged the challenging regulatory environment as a key obstacle to completing the transaction. Spirit is now exploring its future options as a standalone airline.
