Iraq Scraps Major Baghdad Airport Upgrade Amid Corruption Allegations
The Iraqi government has officially cancelled a significant development and rehabilitation contract for Baghdad International Airport. The decision halts a major deal that was in place with the World Bank's International Finance Corporation (IFC). Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani’s office cited suspicions of corruption and “legal and administrative irregularities” linked to the previous administration as the reason for the cancellation. The now-scrapped project was intended to increase the airport's capacity and modernize its facilities to international standards. The government will now seek new, transparent investment opportunities to proceed with the airport's much-needed development.
