Inside the Boneyard: A Look at the U.S. Air Force's Aircraft Graveyard at Davis-Monthan AFB

The 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG) at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona is the world's largest military aircraft storage facility. Commonly known as the "Boneyard," it houses over 4,000 aircraft from all branches of the U.S. military. The desert's low humidity and alkaline soil provide an ideal environment for preserving these assets, preventing rust and corrosion. Aircraft are sent to AMARG for long-term storage, to be reclaimed for parts, or to be returned to active service. The facility plays a crucial role in managing the lifecycle of America's military aviation fleet.
