India Moves to Slash Jet Fuel Taxes to Support Airlines
The Indian government is actively working to shield its domestic airlines from the shock of high jet fuel prices. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has requested that state governments reduce the Value Added Tax (VAT) on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF). These taxes currently vary significantly across the country, ranging from 1% to as high as 30%. With fuel accounting for up to 55% of operational costs for Indian carriers, far above the global average, this move is critical. The goal is to establish a more uniform and lower tax rate to improve the financial health and competitiveness of India's aviation sector.
