India Intervenes to Shield Airlines from Soaring Jet Fuel Prices
The Indian government is taking steps to protect its domestic airlines from the severe financial impact of surging jet fuel costs. Prices for Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) have risen by more than 50% since January, creating a significant burden for carriers still recovering from the pandemic. Fuel accounts for 30-40% of an airline's total operating expenses in India, making price volatility a major threat to stability. To provide relief, authorities are reportedly considering bringing ATF under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime. This measure would lower the tax burden and help stabilize the finances of major airlines.
