From WWII Reconnaissance to Modern Training: The Historical Journey of RCAF's 16 Wing

Originally established in England in 1944, 16 Wing operated Spitfire reconnaissance aircraft during the Second World War before being disbanded. The wing was reactivated in 1951 in France as part of Canada's NATO Cold War commitment, flying F-86 Sabre jets. It later relocated to Germany and was re-designated 1 Canadian Air Group, eventually being deactivated in 1993. That same year, 16 Wing was stood up again at Canadian Forces Base Borden, transforming into the primary training and professional development wing for the Royal Canadian Air Force.
