Ellsworth AFB Selected for B-21 Raider Fleet, Saving US Air Force an Estimated $1 Billion
The United States Air Force has chosen Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota as the first main operating base for the new B-21 Raider stealth bomber. This decision is projected to save approximately $1 billion in military construction costs compared to other candidate bases. The significant savings are due to Ellsworth's existing infrastructure, which is better suited for the new aircraft and requires less extensive modification. Whiteman AFB in Missouri and Dyess AFB in Texas were also considered but would have required more substantial and costly upgrades. The B-21 Raider is the next-generation strategic bomber designed to eventually replace the B-1 and B-2 fleets.
