EASA Issues Safety Alert Over Potential Jet Fuel Contamination in Europe
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has issued a Safety Information Bulletin (SIB) concerning the safe use of jet fuel across Europe. The alert addresses the potential contamination of Jet A1 fuel with Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME). This type of contamination can promote microbial growth within aircraft fuel systems. Such growth poses significant safety risks, including malfunctioning fuel quantity indicators and, in worst-case scenarios, engine flameouts from clogged filters. EASA is recommending that aircraft operators, fuel suppliers, and airports enhance their monitoring and testing protocols to mitigate these risks. The bulletin affects the entire aviation fuel supply chain on the continent.
