Coast Guard Helicopter and Airliner in Near Mid-Air Collision Over D.C. Triggers Investigation
A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and an American Airlines regional jet experienced a near mid-air collision over Washington D.C. on April 23. The two aircraft came within approximately 100 vertical feet of each other, forcing the Embraer 175 pilots to take evasive action following a TCAS alert. The HH-65 Dolphin helicopter was on a VFR training flight and not in communication with air traffic control, a common but risky practice. This serious incident has prompted an NTSB investigation into the procedures governing helicopter operations in the congested airspace around Reagan National Airport. The FAA has also issued a safety alert to air traffic controllers regarding these operations.
