Boeing's C-17 Globemaster: The Challenges Behind Restarting a Shuttered Production Line
Despite its continued strategic importance, restarting production for the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is considered practically impossible. The production line in Long Beach, California, was shut down in 2015 after the final aircraft was delivered, due to a lack of new orders. The primary obstacle to a restart is the complex and now-disbanded supply chain, which involved over 650 suppliers across 44 states. Re-establishing this network, along with the specialized tooling and a highly skilled workforce that has since moved on, would be a monumental and costly task. Experts believe the financial investment and logistical hurdles required would be too significant for any potential customer to bear, making a C-17 revival highly unlikely.
