Altering Flight Paths Could Slash Aviation's Climate Impact by 60%, New Study Reveals
A new study led by the University of Reading demonstrates that minor adjustments to flight paths can dramatically reduce aviation's climate impact. The research found that avoiding specific atmospheric regions where heat-trapping contrails form can cut their warming effect by nearly 60%. This was achieved by making small altitude changes to less than 2% of flights during a trial with British Airways. The strategy focuses on preventing the formation of the most potent and long-lasting contrails, which are responsible for the majority of the warming. This approach presents a cost-effective and readily implementable solution for the industry to significantly mitigate its environmental footprint.
