YF-118G Bird of Prey: The Secretive Demonstrator That Redefined Stealth Aircraft Manufacturing
The YF-118G Bird of Prey was a highly classified technology demonstrator developed by McDonnell Douglas Phantom Works in the 1990s. Funded internally, the project aimed to test groundbreaking stealth technologies and revolutionary low-cost manufacturing techniques. It pioneered the use of large, single-piece composite structures and 3D virtual reality design, drastically reducing development time and costs. Although it never entered production, the subsonic aircraft completed 38 test flights. The lessons learned from the Bird of Prey directly influenced subsequent programs, including the X-45 UCAV and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, making it a pivotal yet often overlooked aircraft in aviation history.
