Wizz Air Warns of Summer Disruption as Engine Issues Ground 20% of Fleet
Wizz Air anticipates significant summer disruption as it is forced to ground approximately one-fifth of its fleet. The grounding is necessary to conduct mandatory inspections on its Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofan (GTF) engines. A rare powder metal defect requires the engines to be removed and checked, a problem affecting hundreds of aircraft globally. As a result of the fleet reduction, the airline expects flight cancellations and has lowered its growth projections. Wizz Air is seeking financial compensation from Pratt & Whitney and is working to mitigate the impact by extending leases on older aircraft.
