Wizz Air Grounds Quarter of Fleet Over Pratt & Whitney Engine Flaw, Reports Passenger Decline
Wizz Air has grounded approximately a quarter of its fleet due to an ongoing issue with Pratt & Whitney engines. The problem, which involves a manufacturing flaw requiring inspections for microscopic cracks, has led to a 3.8% drop in passenger numbers in May. The low-cost carrier reported carrying 5 million passengers, down from the previous year. Wizz Air anticipates around 50 of its aircraft will remain out of service for at least the next six months. To manage the disruption, the airline is extending leases on older planes and acquiring new aircraft.
