Wizz Air Grounds 45 Aircraft for Mandatory Pratt & Whitney Engine Inspections

Wizz Air is grounding 45 of its Airbus A320neo family aircraft, which constitutes about one-fifth of its entire fleet. The action is required to perform accelerated inspections on Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofan (GTF) engines. This global issue stems from a rare condition in the powder metal used to manufacture certain engine components, which necessitates early checks. The airline anticipates a 10% capacity reduction in the second half of the financial year as the inspections will take several months to complete. Wizz Air is seeking financial compensation from Pratt & Whitney and is working to mitigate the disruption by extending leases and seeking replacement aircraft.
