Wizz Air Grounds 45 Aircraft Due to Pratt & Whitney Engine Defect
Wizz Air has grounded 45 of its Airbus A320neo family aircraft because of a widespread issue with their Pratt & Whitney engines. The problem is caused by a rare condition in the powder metal used for certain engine components, requiring accelerated and lengthy inspections. This engine flaw is not unique to Wizz Air, affecting hundreds of planes globally. The grounding has forced the budget airline to cancel numerous flights, leading to an estimated financial impact of €200 million in lost profits. To manage the disruption, the carrier is extending leases on older aircraft and seeking additional planes.
