Wizz Air Grounds 20% of Fleet for Mandatory Pratt & Whitney Engine Checks

Wizz Air has grounded approximately one-fifth of its fleet to conduct mandatory inspections on its Pratt & Whitney engines. The issue stems from a rare condition found in the powder metal used for certain engine components, necessitating accelerated checks. This is a known global problem affecting numerous airlines that use the same Geared Turbofan (GTF) engines. The groundings have significantly impacted the airline's capacity and resulted in a substantial financial hit to its half-year profits. Wizz Air anticipates the disruption will continue, with some aircraft potentially out of service into 2026, and is seeking compensation from the engine manufacturer.
