Wizz Air Faces Years of Disruption as Engine Issues Ground 45 Aircraft
Wizz Air is experiencing significant operational challenges due to mandatory inspections on its Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofan engines. The airline anticipates having around 45 of its Airbus A320neo family aircraft grounded by March 2025. This global issue stems from a manufacturing flaw involving a contaminated powder metal used in high-pressure turbine discs. CEO József Váradi has warned that the resulting disruption, which includes flight cancellations and reduced network growth, could persist for a couple of years. The airline is receiving compensation from engine manufacturer RTX and is attempting to mitigate the impact by extending leases on older aircraft.
