Wizz Air Extends Aircraft Groundings as Pratt & Whitney Engine Checks Continue into 2026
Wizz Air has announced that mandatory inspections on its Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofan engines will now extend into 2026, prolonging aircraft groundings. The issue stems from a rare powder metal defect in high-pressure turbine disks that requires extensive shop visits for a significant portion of its fleet. The airline anticipates having around 50 aircraft out of service by the end of March 2025 due to these inspections. This ongoing disruption has forced the carrier to adjust its growth plans and cancel some flights, though it is seeking financial compensation from the engine manufacturer to mitigate the impact.
