Volga-Dnepr An-124 Suffers Uncontained Engine Failure, Runway Overrun in Brazil

A Volga-Dnepr Airlines Antonov An-124 cargo aircraft sustained substantial damage during an aborted takeoff at Dourados Airport, Brazil. The crew rejected the takeoff at high speed after the number three engine suffered an uncontained failure. Unable to stop in time, the aircraft overran the runway by approximately 60 meters, resulting in the collapse of its nose gear. All 22 occupants evacuated safely without injuries. The subsequent investigation determined the engine failure was caused by a fractured high-pressure turbine blade originating from a manufacturing defect.
