USAF's Aging Boeing 707 Fleet: Why It Will Continue Flying Until At Least 2026
The United States Air Force continues to operate several critical aircraft based on the six-decade-old Boeing 707 airframe. These specialized variants, such as the E-3 Sentry (AWACS) and the RC-135 family, perform essential intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions. Despite their age and high operational costs, their unique capabilities have made them indispensable. The replacement program for the E-3, the E-7 Wedgetail, is underway but the transition will take several years to complete. Consequently, the USAF will rely on these legacy 707-based platforms until at least 2026, and likely beyond, to avoid capability gaps.
