US Maritime Chief to Oppose EU's Green Shipping Levy at IMO Meeting
The United States is sending its Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) chairman, Daniel Maffei, to an International Maritime Organization (IMO) meeting in London. Maffei's mission is to build opposition against a proposed European Union levy on shipping's greenhouse gas emissions. The US administration fears that a regional EU tax would fragment international shipping regulations and negatively impact global trade. Instead of regional measures, the US advocates for a single, global standard for emissions set by the IMO. This position aligns the US with other nations, including China and Brazil, against the EU's environmental proposal.
