US Judge Blocks JetBlue-Spirit Merger; Airbus Reports Record 2023 Orders
A U.S. federal judge has blocked the proposed $3.8 billion merger between JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines, ruling that the deal would violate antitrust law. The Justice Department successfully argued the acquisition would reduce competition and lead to higher fares for travelers by eliminating a key ultra-low-cost carrier. In other major industry news, Airbus announced a new industry record, securing 2,094 net aircraft orders in 2023. The manufacturer also confirmed it delivered 735 commercial aircraft to 87 customers throughout the year. Additionally, NASA's X-59 Quiet SuperSonic Technology aircraft has moved to a new testing facility in California as it prepares for its first flight.
