US Airline Fuel Consumption and Costs Declined in January 2024
U.S. airlines consumed 1.39 billion gallons of fuel in January 2024, a 10.8% decrease from December 2023, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. This figure also represents a 3.1% drop compared to January 2023 and is 7.5% below pre-pandemic levels from January 2019. Concurrently, the average cost of fuel fell to $2.77 per gallon, a 1.8% decrease from the previous month and a 14.5% drop year-over-year. The combined decrease in consumption and price resulted in total airline fuel expenditures of $3.86 billion for the month.
