US Air Force Shifts Strategy for Sixth-Generation Tanker Program
The U.S. Air Force is officially altering its procurement strategy for its future aerial refueling fleet. The service is delaying the development of the advanced, stealthy Next-Generation Air-refueling System (NGAS). Instead, the immediate focus will shift to acquiring a "bridge" tanker, known as the Advanced Tanker System (ATS). This decision is reportedly driven by a need to recapitalize the aging tanker fleet more quickly and mitigate the technological risks of a sixth-generation platform. This strategic pivot suggests a re-evaluation of near-term threats versus long-term survivability for support aircraft.
