US Air Force Begins Phased Retirement of Iconic A-10 Warthog Fleet
The United States Air Force is moving forward with its plan to retire the iconic A-10 Thunderbolt II, commonly known as the Warthog. The first aircraft are being sent to the 'boneyard' at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, with the full fleet expected to be phased out by 2029. For decades, the A-10 has been a highly effective close-air-support platform, renowned for its durability and powerful GAU-8 Avenger cannon. Despite the planned retirement, some of the aircraft have recently received new wings to extend their service life. This has fueled a long-standing debate about retiring a specialized aircraft that many still see as vital for ground troop support.
