US Air Force Awards Boeing Contract for KC-46A Next-Generation Tanker
The U.S. Air Force has awarded a contract to The Boeing Company for its next-generation aerial refueling tanker, which will be designated the KC-46A. The initial contract is valued at approximately $3.5 billion for the development and delivery of 18 aircraft by 2017. This award marks the first phase of the KC-X tanker modernization program, which aims to replace the aging KC-135 Stratotanker fleet. Based on the commercial Boeing 767 platform, the KC-46A is expected to provide enhanced refueling capabilities, greater efficiency, and increased capacity for cargo and aeromedical evacuation missions. The total program plans for the delivery of 179 new tankers.
