United Airlines CEO Urges U.S. to Fund Sustainable Fuel Like It Funded Solar Energy
United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby is calling for U.S. government policies to subsidize and scale up the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Kirby argues that the current high cost and limited supply of SAF are significant obstacles to the airline industry's decarbonization efforts. He draws a direct comparison to the solar and wind industries, which he notes were only able to scale and become cost-competitive after receiving government support like production tax credits. Without similar long-term incentives to de-risk investment, Kirby warns that achieving widespread SAF adoption will be nearly impossible.
