UK Investigators Blame Maintenance Error for DHL Boeing 767 Landing Gear Door Detachment
The UK's Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has released its final report on a serious incident involving a DHL Boeing 767-316F. The aircraft's left main landing gear door detached shortly after takeoff from Leipzig, Germany, on May 25, 2022. Investigators determined the cause was a maintenance error, where an uplock hook was not correctly secured. This was the second time a similar incident had occurred on the same aircraft. Following the report, the manufacturer has issued a service bulletin to improve the design's visibility and prevent future errors. The AAIB has also issued a safety recommendation to the FAA to mandate the modification.
