UK Investigation Highlights New Thermal Runaway Fire Hazards in Electric Aircraft
The UK's Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has released a report on an incident involving a Pipistrel Velis Electro, the world's first type-certified electric aircraft. Following a hard landing, the investigation revealed a significant new risk, even though no fire occurred. The AAIB warns that damage to the battery's liquid cooling system could lead to a short circuit and an uncontrollable 'thermal runaway' fire. This event highlights that electric aircraft introduce unique dangers for which pilots and emergency first responders may be unprepared. The agency has issued a safety recommendation for regulators to review crashworthiness standards for battery installations.
