U.S. scheduled passenger and cargo airlines consumed 1.45 billion gallons of fuel in January 2024, a 10.8% decrease compared to January 2023. This figure also represents a 2.8% drop from the previous month, December 2023. The cost per gallon of aviation fuel fell to $2.80, which is 18% lower than in January 2023 and 2.1% lower than in December 2023. Consequently, the total fuel expenditure for these airlines was $4.05 billion in January. This marks a substantial 27% decrease from the same month last year. These statistics encompass all operations, both domestic and international, as reported to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
