U.S. Airlines Expand Japan Routes to Capitalize on Weak Yen Tourism Boom
United Airlines and American Airlines are increasing their services to Japan to meet surging inbound travel demand. United is launching a new route from Houston to Tokyo, while American is adding a flight from New York, both landing at Haneda Airport. This expansion is directly fueled by the historically weak yen, which makes Japan a highly affordable destination for foreign tourists. As a result, visitor spending in the country reached a record high in 2023. U.S. carriers are strategically positioning themselves to capture this lucrative market, filling a capacity gap also left by reduced flights from China.
