The Quiet Revolution: How an Autonomous Train Network Became a Global Logistics Milestone
Australian mining giant Rio Tinto has successfully operated the world's first fully autonomous, heavy-haul, long-distance rail network. Known as AutoHaul, the system was a multi-year, $940 million project to automate 1,700km of track in the remote Pilbara region. Since becoming fully operational, these driverless trains have transported over a billion tonnes of iron ore. This significant achievement in transport automation was accomplished with little of the public fanfare that surrounds autonomous cars or trucks, proving the viability of large-scale autonomy in industrial logistics.
