The Hawker P.1154: Uncovering the Story of Britain's Cancelled Supersonic Harrier
The Hawker Siddeley P.1154 was a planned supersonic V/STOL combat aircraft developed in the United Kingdom in the early 1960s. It was designed to be a common replacement for the Royal Air Force's Hawker Hunter and the Royal Navy's de Havilland Sea Vixen. The project aimed to combine Mach 2 performance with the vertical takeoff and landing capabilities pioneered by the P.1127 Kestrel. However, conflicting operational requirements between the two services led to significant design challenges and cost overruns. Ultimately, the ambitious program was cancelled by the British government in 1965, with development efforts shifting to the simpler, subsonic Hawker Siddeley Harrier.
