Sumburgh Airport to Receive £10m Radar System for 24/7 Surveillance
Sumburgh Airport in Shetland is set for a major infrastructure upgrade with the installation of a new £10m radar system. The advanced technology will replace the current radar, which has been in operation for over 30 years. This new system will provide continuous, 24/7 surveillance, a significant enhancement over the current equipment which only operates during airport hours. The around-the-clock capability is crucial for supporting helicopter flights for the vital oil and gas industry, as well as for search and rescue operations. According to Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd (Hial), the project will significantly improve the resilience and reliability of air traffic services.
