Study: Electric and Hydrogen Aircraft Could Handle One-Third of European Short-Haul Flights by 2040
A new study by SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking and McKinsey & Company projects a significant shift towards sustainable aviation in Europe. According to the report, electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft could handle up to 37% of intra-European air traffic by 2040. This transition would primarily impact routes shorter than 1,000 kilometers, replacing conventional planes with greener alternatives. The study highlights significant challenges, including the development of new aircraft, adaptation of airport infrastructure, and securing vast amounts of renewable energy. The total investment required to achieve this vision is estimated to be between €175 billion and €235 billion. Approximately 50 to 70 airports are identified as potential early adopters for this new technology.
