Space Force Declares Polar Satellite Payloads Operational for Arctic Communications
The U.S. Space Force has formally declared its first two Enhanced Polar System-Recapitalization (EPS-R) payloads as operational. These payloads are hosted on two Space Norway satellites and provide secure, jam-resistant satellite communications for military forces in the Arctic. The system ensures continuous connectivity for users operating above 65 degrees North latitude, a critical gap in previous coverage. This milestone follows the successful completion of on-orbit testing after the satellites were launched in 2023. The activation of these payloads marks a significant enhancement for U.S. and allied strategic capabilities in the polar region.
